Explosive device kills army commander,7 soldiers in Damascus

Syrian army commander came under attack by Ahrar al-Sham Sunday, when an explosive device was detonated near his car in al-Diwaniyah neighborhood of Damascus, killing him and 7 of his escorts, the Islamist group said in statement.

Ahrar al-Sham said Brigadier General, Bassam Mehanna al-Ali, and 7 of his soldiers were killed Sunday morning by an explosive device targeted their cars.

Al-Ali was one of the army masterminds who drew plans and tactics of regime forces during in the 4-year conflict.

The slain officer was born in Safita town near the coastal city Tartus.

Syria's conflict, now in its fourth year, has killed at least 220,000 people, according to activists, and forced millions to flee the country.
