Syrian opposition chief Ahmad Jarba visited Daraa in the south of the strife-torn country near the Jordan border Thursday to mark the Muslim Eid al-Fitr feast, a National Coalition source told AFP.
"Jarba took part in Eid al-Fitr prayers in the countryside of Daraa, and made a tour in the company of Colonel Ahmad Fahd al-Nehme, who heads Daraa's [rebel] military council," the source said on condition of anonymity.
After he was chosen early July to head the Istanbul-based Coalition, Jarba visited rebel-held areas in the north of Syria, said the source.
"This visit to the south shows that large swathes of Syria, from the north to the south, are in opposition control," he added.
During his visit to the unspecified location of Daraa's countryside, where rebels have recently made progress in battling President Bashar al-Assad's troops, Jarba also visited schools housing people forced to flee their homes.
