At least 40 people killed in Assad airstrikes on al-Bab near Aleppo

At least 40 people have been killed and dozens wounded in Syrian regime airstrikes on the northern town of al-Bab near Aleppo, activists said on Monday.

The death toll of three-day bombing on al-Bab has reached 75 civilians, according to monitoring groups and activists.

In the last few days barrel bomb attacks stormed a crowded market and a mosque, leaving dozens killed including children and women.

Monday's deadly attack followed a deadly week of aerial bombardment by Bashar al-Assad's forces on the rebel-held town north of Syria.

Aleppo city is divided between the Syria military, backed by militia, and a range of insurgent groups including al Qaeda's Nusra Front, Islamist brigades and Western-backed rebels.

Meanwhile, at least 230,000 people have been killed in Syria's conflict; more than double the figure documented a year ago and probably still an under-estimate, according to the United Nations.
