Islam Army to meet main food needs in Eastern Ghouta: statement

(Zaman Al Wasl)- Islam Army, key rebel group in Eastern Ghouta suburbs near Damascus, is seeking to meet the main food needs of the besieged people after three years of suffocating siege by Syrian regime, said in statement posted online.

Zahran Alloush, Islam Army's commander, will form a committee able to find proper solutions to handle the siege like urging other armed groups to contribute and imposing fair distribution for available food staples.

Number of initiatives carrying out by rebel groups and charities have provided food baskets that include basic food materials. But still not enough amid deteriorating living conditions.

In their turn, activists say some armed groups, active in Eastern Ghouta, have piles of stored food while people are facing regime's starvation policy.

Syria's conflict began in March 2011 as popular protests against four decades of Assad family rule but changed into armed insurgency under a security force crackdown.

More than 230,000 people killed and over 12 million forced to flee their homes.
