More than 30,000 acres of natural forest have been destroyed in the western countryside of Homs province last Friday when a large fire broke out, eye-witnesses told Zaman al-Wasl.

Eyewitnesses said in early hours of Friday a large fire had broken out in the regime-controlled town of Sheen, 20 km (13 miles) west Homs for ambiguous reason then it spread to the fields in villages of Sweri and Rowdet alwaer reaching to Homs-Tartus highway within hours caused its closure the whole day.

Local residents in the village of Sheen mentioned that fire engines have reached to the village and managed to control the fire after it destroyed 200 Square Kilometres of fields planted with summer fruits trees and other forest land.

Moreover, Marmerita town witnessed similar fire and the cause was not known.
Zaman al-Wasl's correspondent mentioned that fire had reached to people’s houses in Marmerita and village of Kafra and if the fire engines had not arrived on times, the fire would have reached to the natural forests in Alsaeh mountain and Zaitoniyeh mountains which would make it almost impossible to turn off the fire.

On the other side, Wadi Alnasara News Facebook page confirmed that fires had destroyed huge area of Alsaeh mountain and towns of Mermerita, Alnasriyeh, Ein Albardeh and Kafra causing many conditions of burns and suffocating among people.

Activist Khalid al-Hosni had confirmed the same story mentioning that fire had started near the Education centre and the centre of National Defence Forces in Marmerita.

The activist mentioned that fires had completely eaten forests of many mountains and it reached to many villages and towns.

Al-Hosni reported that most affected areas were fields and forests with dry grass which accelerated the spread of the fire.

According to the activist, the most affected area was Alsaeh mountain where the National Defence Militia used for shelling towns of Alhosn, Zara and Haserjeyeh. He mentioned that a Church and a status of the Virgin Mary are at the top of the mountain, and it is expected to have been destroyed.

Many Facebook pages loyal to the Syrian regime condemned the carelessness of all official bodies with the fires and people’s life and the delay of the fire engines and civil defence beside recklessness of people who kept taking selfie with fire and staying smoking Shisha instead of helping in turning off the fire.

The area is under the effects of the Seasonal Indian high wave which led to extreme elevation of temperature.
