ISIS seizes control of T-4 military airport east Homs: group supporters

(Zaman Al Wasl)- Islamic State news feeds on social media said the radical group on Saturday has seized control of T-4 military air base east of Homs.

The ongoing clashes to seize the biggest air base in Syria has erupted weeks ago, a move comes after rapid advances by the ultra-hardline Sunni group in Syria desert, taking control of swaths of territory including the ancient city of Palmyra.

Activists reported days ago that ISIS stormed the fences of the strategic military airport. But yet no official statement by ISIS confirming the reported news.

Ten days ago, ISIS took control of two villages and also an artillery battalion affiliated to the T-4, 15 km (10 miles) east the air base.

ISIS, also, blew up a gas pipeline near Furqlus town east Homs, activists said.

State-run media mourned days ago General Mohsen Makhlouf, the commander of the powerful 11th Division, who had been killed by ISIS in T-4 battles.

In relevant development, ISIS on Thursday stormed the main gas plant in Homs province by grad missiles, leaving huge damage in the main gas supply of regime-controlled city, well-informed source told Zaman al-Wasl.

Ebla gas plant, 45 km (30 miles) east Homs, feeds power plants of the city by 2 million cubic meters of gas per day, while the maximum capacity is up to 4 million cubic meters per day.

ISIS seeks to tighten the siege on Homs through the eastern gate. Moreover it controls the gas and oil fields.

More than 230,000 people killed and over 12 million forced to flee their homes since the Syrian revolution erupted in March 2011.
