Army artillery kills 5 family of five members near Zabadani as thousands flee assault

Syrian army artillery has killed a family of 5 members in the mountainous town of Madhaya near the stricken city of Zabadani on the Lebanese border, activists said on Saturday.

Meanwhile, thousands of families fled Zabadani and neighboring villages as fighting between Assad forces backed by Hezbollah and Islamist rebels enters the fourth week amid rebels' stubborn.

Activists also reported killing of 7 people in Bukain town in barrel bomb attacks on Friday.

On another battlefront, the Syrian regime army and allied militia NDF have regained control over several northwestern villages from rebels on a plain crucial for defending coastal areas that Damascus holds, Reuters said on Saturday.

The military is battling insurgents including al Qaeda's Syria wing Nusra Front and the Islamist group Ahrar al-Sham for control of Sahl al-Ghab, a plain that runs alongside the western coastal mountains as well as lying close to Hama city.
