Rebels thwart army attack on Salahuddin neighborhood in Aleppo, kill 17

Nour el-Din al-Zinki movement has thwarted an attack launched by Syrian forces and allied militias on Salahuddin neighborhood in northern city of Aleppo, killing 17 soldiers, the rebel group said in statement posted online Thursday.

The Islamist movement said it repelled regime army in Salahuddin neighborhood, killing 10 solders.

Also, 7 troopers killed by al-Zinki group in Madfaeyat al-Zahra'a district, according to the statement.

In the northern countryside, moderate rebels backed by U.S.led air strikes have made a progress against ISIS fighters after fierce fighting, activists said on Thursday.

Zaman al-Wasl reporter said rebels had taken 5 checkpoints from ISIS in Om Housh and Om Qura villages, taking advantage of U.S.-led air strikes that pounded ISIS barracks.

The Islamic State's campaign of extreme violence and abuses against both civilians and rival opposition groups has prompted a backlash across rebel-held Syria, where many hope the US air campaign next door will be extended.
