Ahrar al-Sham Islamic movement on Saturday has killed a senior regime army officer by an explosive device planted near his car in Damascus, the dominant rebel group said in statement.
The Salafist group gave no further details over the attack that killed Brigadier General Raeef Ali al-Hasan and his aide in al-Abbaseen square.
Meanwhile, a ceasefire in a Syrian town near the Lebanese border and in two villages to the north has broken down after renewed heavy shelling, Reuters said on Saturday.
The truce between the regime army and the Lebanese group Hezbollah on the one side, and Syrian insurgents on the other, came into effect on Thursday in the western town of Zabadani and the Shi'ite Muslim villages of Kefraya and al-Foua in the northwest.
