Istanbul's Osmanbey Market affords good income for Syrian refugees

ISTANBUL (Zaman Al Wasl)- Osmanbey's Market is considered the largest and most important commercial centre in Istanbul, where shops of wholesale and retail gather in an area famous of trading clothes, finest fabrics and Turkish threads.

The market depends mainly on the Arab customers from the Gulf and Lebanon, the Turkish traders have started requesting Syrian people to work for them in order to deal with Arab customers.

Mustafa, who was graduate from the Faculty of Medicine in Damascus University, his dream was to continue in General Surgery specialty, but he was forced to escape the country because the security forces chased him, he left to Turkey, and he now looks for a job in Osmanbey Market because he was not able to get his certificate of Medicine recognised by the Turkish medical body.

“the Syrian Medical Degrees are not accepted in Turkey, because many fake university degrees were seen, which badly affected the credibility of the Syrian University Degrees” Mustafa explained.

Mustafa is currently working in a shop for wool and silk threads, which provides threads to textile factories in the Arab region, He earns two thousand Turkish Pounds, and works 10 hours a day with a break for one day a week.
Mustafa pointed to the next door restaurant of grills where two young Syrian men, Omar and Nader, work to welcome the Arabic customers and take their orders.

Both Omar and Nader as well as Mustafa refused to take any photo of them. Omar said that when he was in Syria he had owned a shop for fabrics in Harika market in Damascus, but now he 2,500 Turkish pounds, which is relatively acceptable.

Nader mentioned that Turkish traders started to rely on employing an Arabic workers because Turks often do not speak English or Arabic, thereby it hinders their communication with Arabic customers.

Mustafa added that some stores give employees bonus of the sold materials, which makes working in Osmanbey a better opportunity for making money than other places. He said that some shops even increase the salary at hot seasons when lots of Arabs visit the market.
