At least 556 civilians killed in Assad aerial campaign on Eastern Ghouta: monitor

At least 556 civilians have been killed in Syrian regime's deadly aerial campaign on Eastern Ghouta suburbs near Damascus since August 10, a local monitoring group said.

The Unified Relief Office in the embattled eastern district of the capital has documented death of 566 people, including 123 children and 43 women.

The attacks on the rebel-held Eastern Ghouta region included August 16 air strikes that killed 117 people in a marketplace in Douma town, 10 km (7 miles)northeast Damascus.

The office said 1192 people have been wounded  and 895 housed have been destroyed completely. The aerial campaign has also left 372 orphans in Ghouta, the office said.

The air strikes on Eastern Ghouta district have coincided with a wider intensification of the four-year-old civil war estimated to have killed around a quarter of a million people and driven more than 11 million from their homes.

The Syrian Network for human Rights said at least 16,744 enforced disappearance cases by regime have been documented in Damascus suburbs since the Syrian revolution erupted in March 2011.
