An individual suspected of human trafficking resulting in the death of 12 people off the southern coast of Bodrum, Turkey, last week has been detained in the southern Mugla province on Sunday.
The Turkish suspect was taken into custody in Bodrum district in an operation conducted by police in the evening Sunday, according to security sources.
The suspect accused of “migrant smuggling and causing death voluntarily” will be sent to court on Monday.
Four Syrian suspects had also been arrested on Friday in another police operation conducted to find human smugglers in relation to the Bodrum refugee tragedy.
On Wednesday, 12 people, including eight children, drowned after their boat sank en route to the Greek islands in the Aegean Sea. Their bodies had washed up on the shores of Turkey’s tourist destination Bodrum.
