Syrian Democratic Union convenes its conference

                                        

Syrian Democratic Union invites individuals and political organizations to join its constitutive conference. The conference is to be held on the 14 September in Istanbul, Turkey.

The union has already held a consultancy meeting which combined a number of figures and organizations the union described as "democratic." In addition to a number of youth and women organizations in Cairo last May.

Michel Kilo, who later joined the National Coalition for opposition and revolution forces, headed the consultancy meeting along with other opposition figures allaying with him.

One of the prominent figures, Ahmed Al-jarba, the Chief of the Syria National Coalition within "the democratic bloc."

Zaman Alwasl, to get more information about the constitutive conference, contacted Merh Al-buqa'i, the person in charge of the preparation media committee for the conference,

Al-buqa'i clarified the coming conference is considered constitutive and election will be held to choose the union secretariat and the offices through a free voting procedure.

One source in the union confirmed to Zaman Alwasl, the leadership of the union will work to become the biggest political force in future Syria.

Merh Al-buqa'i mentioned some names of the opposition figures in the union like; Michiel Kilo, Kemal Al-lebwani, Ahmed Al-jarba, the econmoist, Samir Seefan, Fehd Al-Basha, Khalef Al-khalef, Iyad Al-qudsi, Omer Al-khosh and others.

Zaman Alwasl got a copy of the invitation for the conference. In the text, the union defined itself  as a democratic organization.

It aims at organizing the Syrian activists inside and outside Syria in one democratic organization. The objective is to "work together to support the Syrian people revolution, and contribute to transfer Syria from a dictatorship to a democratic system."

 

The statement of the union adds, "It is not a political party with a fixed ideology. It is a union open to independent individuals, parties, coordinates, youth groups, and others to join. The union takes any member from different political organizations on the condition it will not be in opposition to to the union's political program."

 The union's program is based on the general principles of democracy and public freedoms, human rights, and citizenship. The devolution of power goes through ballot boxes. At the same time, it accepts other political trends inside its broad consensus.

The invitation to the conference was sent to a number of political activists and  Syrian media persons via email. Attached in the email, a copy of the union's rules of procedures, and the project of the union which will be presented at the conference for discussion and approval.

The invitation concluded in a call to join the union for any individual or group to enhance "permanent friendship" with all active political parties.

 The union Facebook page makes it clear that it is a group of enlightened and independent Syrian figures who intended on forming an independent political institution whom its members believe in democracy in principle and everyday life, and believe in a plural civil state as a political path for new Syria.

The intention was put forth during a meeting on the 11 of May, 2013 in Cairo.
