Homs: at least 17 people killed in missile attack on Al Waer neighborhood

At least 17 people, most of them children, have killed in army missile attack on the embattled neighborhood of Al Waer in central city of Homs, a monitoring group said Saturday.

The surface-to-surface missile targeted a public park in the besieged neighborhood where tens of children were celebrating the third day of Eid Al Adha, Muslims' holy sacrifice feast, leaving 17 people killed, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.

Activists said regime army had also hit the ambulance cars in al-Waer, the neighborhood that has been under suffocating siege for over two years.

The Syrian military frequently uses helicopters to drop crude barrel bombs- giant canisters packed with hundreds of pounds of explosives and scrap metal- on rebel-held towns and neighborhoods.

Syria's conflict began in March 2011 as popular protests against four decades of Assad family rule but changed into armed insurgency under a security force crackdown.

More than 250,000 Syrian people killed and over 12 million forced to flee their homes.
