At least 17 civilians killed in regime missile attacks on Al Mayadeen east Syria

At least 17 civilians have killed in four army missile attacks on eastern city of al-Mayadeen in a territory controlled by Islamic State, a monitoring group said on Monday.

The Syrian Network for Human Rights said 5 children and 3 women were among the victims of the deadly missile attack on ISIS-held city near Deir Ezzor.

The Syrian military frequently uses helicopters to drop crude barrel bombs- giant canisters packed with hundreds of pounds of explosives and scrap metal- on rebel-held towns and neighborhoods.

Syria's conflict began in March 2011 as popular protests against four decades of Assad family rule but changed into armed insurgency under a security force crackdown.

More than 250,000 Syrian people killed and over 12 million forced to flee their homes.
