Syria rebels shell Russian embassy in Damascus during rally

Syrian rebels based in Damascus' Eastern Ghouta suburbs have fired two shells at the Russian embassy in the capital as scores of pro-regime supporters gathered outside the compound to thank Moscow for its intervention in Syria, AP reported

An Associated Press reporter was outside the embassy on Tuesday morning when the first shell slammed into the compound in central Damascus and smoke billowed from inside.

As people started running away, another shell hit the area.

Local activists told Zaman al-Wasl the mortar shells were fired by the dominant Islam Army who controls most of Damascus eastern suburbs and who frequently rocked regime-held areas.

It was not immediately clear if there were casualties.

Islam Army fighters have targeted the embassy in the past but it was not clear if Tuesday's attack targeted the rally.

Russia began launching airstrikes against rebel-held areas in Syria on Sept. 30. Some of the attacks have targeted Islam Army positions in the northeastern countryside of Damascus.
