Assad troops, NDF militia launch new offensive north of Homs

Syrian regime army backed by National Defense militia (NDF)l has aunched a major assault early Saturday on Sansil and Jawalak frontlines north of Homs city.

A fierce fighting reported on the strategic districts in the northern countryside of Homs, activists told Zaman al Wasl.

The northern countryside of the central city has occurred to severe aerial campaign, about 400 people have been killed in Russian air strikes, monitoring groups said, mostly from Homs.

On Friday, at least 15 civilians mostly children were killed in Syrian regime air strikes on the rebel-held town of Talbiseh. The stricken town has been under devastating aerial campaign for the third week since Russia began its air strikes in Syria on Sep. 30.

Also in northern Homs, Militants loyal to Bashar al-Assad have kidnapped 20 women to press on rebels freeing regime army corpses who were killed in the ongoing clashes, activists said.

Syrian troops are also trying to advance to the east of Aleppo towards Kweires military airport, aiming to break a siege of the base by Islamic State and other insurgents.

The most recent development over the Syrian conflict was a statement delivered by Russia's Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov who said Russia's air force in Syria is ready to support the Free Syrian Army, the main Western-backed opposition group battling al-Assad, in its fight against Islamic State.

"We are ready to also support patriotic opposition, including the so-called Free Syrian Army, from the air," Lavrov said in an interview with Rossiya 1 television channel.
