Russia jets carry out more than 20 raids on northern Homs, fight continues

(Zaman Al Wasl)- Russia's warplanes have carried out more than 20 raids on northern countryside of Homs city, activists told Zaman al Wasl on Thursday as the regime army backed by fighters from Iran and Lebanon's Hezbollah launch a new offensive on embattled towns of the central province.

A rebel operation room said at least 20 regime troops were killed and wounded in northern Homs.

Meanwhile, 14 rebel factions operating in al Houla plain have formed a military command to unified efforts and close the ranks.

Russian warplanes killed at least 120 people in more than 300 airstrikes that targeted six towns in Syria’s western Homs province this month, according to local activists.

The regime army and allied militias have launched a series of ground offensives against rebel-held areas of western and northwestern Syria since Russia began air strikes in the country on Sept. 30.

At least 120,000 people have been displaced since early October in the Syrian governorates of Aleppo, Hama and Idlib, the United Nations said on Monday, more than doubling an earlier estimate of 50,000.

Russia says it is targeting Islamic State militants with its bombing raids, but U.S. officials have said most of the attacks are directed at other militant groups that threaten the government of Bashar al-Assad.
