At least 47 killed in missile attack on Douma

(Zaman Al Wasl)- At least 47 people were killed and about 200 wounded after Syrian regime forces fired missiles into a market place in a town northeast Damascus, activists and monitoring groups said on Friday.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said government forces fired 12 missiles at Douma, 10-15 km northeast of Damascus, according to Reuters.

The Syrian Civil Defence group posted a picture on its Facebook page of about a dozen bloodied bodies laid on the ground and said more than 45 had died in the attack.

On Thursday, 15 people had been killed and 50 wounded in regime air strikes stormed Douma's main field hospital.

Syrian activists and state-owned media said Thursday that several mortar shells hit near the Russian Embassy in Damascus, but no injuries were recorded.

The regime army and allied militias have launched a series of ground offensives against rebel-held areas of western and northwestern Syria since Russia began air strikes in the country on Sept. 30.
