Rebels, Nusra Front make gains near Aleppo, kill 50 soldiers

(Zaman Al Wasl)- Syrian rebel groups led by Nusra Front have recaptured a ground from regime troops and their allies in the northern and southern countryside of Aleppo, as fighting still underway, rebel commander told Zaman Al Wasl Sunday.

Rebels and Nusra Fighters have recaptured al Hwayiz, al-Shagila, al-Hemaidi villages, and al-Qarasi and al Jameeiya hills, while regime forces seized control of  Maryamin, Jmeima villages south of Aleppo.

Abu al-Abbas, Nusra Front's field commander told Zaman Al Wasl that 50 regime soldiers were killed in Nusra's counter attack started early Saturday.

Nusra Front posted online footage showing its advance in time Russian warplanes extended its air strikes on eastern and southern Aleppo.

At least 64 people, including 28 children, have been killed by Syrian army and Russian air raids in Aleppo in the past 24 hours, activists said on Saturday.

The raids hit Aleppo city and a number of towns and villages elsewhere in the province, the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said, as Syrian regime forces backed by Russian air cover intensified bombardments against insurgents throughout the country, according to Reuters.

At least 120,000 people have been displaced since early October in Aleppo, Hama and Idlib, the United Nations said on Monday, more than doubling an earlier estimate of 50,000.

In the Syrian east, a newly formed U.S.-backed Syrian rebel alliance on Saturday launched an offensive against Islamic State in the northeast province of Hasaka, a day after the United States said it would send special forces to advise insurgents fighting the jihadists.
