Rebels begin evacuating last Homs district under deal

(Zaman Al Wasl- AFP)-  Syrian rebel forces on Wednesday began evacuating the last district they hold in the central city of Homs under a deal with the regime, sending out dozens of civilians, a monitor said.

"The first bus of civilians has left Waer," said Rami Abdel Rahman, head of the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

The deal was reached earlier this month and will see some 2,000 rebels and their families leave the besieged Waer district.

Sources told
Zaman al Wasl that  about 350 people, including 100 women, have accompanied rebels in their new destination to the Syrian north.

Al Wear neighborhood has been under suffocating siege for over 30 months, activists says.

Homs was once dubbed "the capital of the revolution" against Assad. Most of the city, except the battered district of al-Waer, has returned to regime control after two years of bombardment and siege.

Syria's war started with a pro-democracy movement that grew into an armed uprising and has inflamed regional confrontations. More than 250,000 people have died in the conflict, according to United Nations estimates.
