(Zaman Al Wasl)- Syrian regime forces launched major attack on two main outskirts south of the capital, amid heavy aerial and ground bombardment, activists said Thursday.
Regime forces have renewed attacks on the besieged towns of Daraya and Moadamiyet al-Sham in an effort to eliminate any rebel presence in the southern suburbs.
Local activists in Daraya said army had pounded the western neighborhoods of the town with 14 barrel bombs, 4 surface-to-surface missiles, alongside with heavy artillery.
In Moadamiyet al-Sham, 8 barrel bombs have been dropped on the town, residents said.
Syrian regime warplanes had dropped 820 barrel bombs on Daraya in November, local governing council said.
The southern outskirts of Damascus have been under suffocating siege for over three years and under daily barrage of barrel bombs in the last three months.
Bashar al-Assad's air force has frequently used the barrel bombs which made from a large barrel-shaped metal container that has been filled with high explosives, with possibly shrapnel, oil or chemicals.
Syria's war started with a pro-democracy movement that grew into an armed uprising and has inflamed regional confrontations. More than 250,000 people have died in the conflict, according to United Nations estimates.
