Damascus: Rebels kill 20 regime soldiers in Eastern Ghouta

(Zaman Al Wasl)- Powerful Islam Army rebel group said the Islamist rebels had killed 20 Syrian regime troops and allied militants in the besieged Eastern Ghouta district near Damascus, senior commander said Friday.

Islam Army's spokesman, Islam Alloush, said rebels had carried out a counter attack on army bastions in Marj al-Sultan region near the rebel-controlled military airport of al-Marj.

Islam Army said more than 170 regime troops have been killed since clashes erupted two weeks ago.

The Syrian regime army backed by Russia's warplanes aims to divide Eastern Ghouta suburbs into two parts and to cut the main supply route by taking Marj al-Sultan region, the group says.

Last Tuesday, Islamist factions operating in the Eastern Ghouta formed a new military operations room including Islam Army, Ajnad al-Sham, Ahrar al-Sham, al-Nusra Front and Faylaq al-Rahman.

Since 2011, four million Syrians have fled abroad. Millions more have been internally displaced, while about 300,000 have been killed.
