Russia's warplanes conduct 40 raids in Palmyra, eastern Homs province

(Zaman Al Wasl)- Russia's warplanes have conducted more than 40 raids on ISIS-held ancient city of Palmyra and neighboring towns, local activists said Wednesday.

The air strikes have also targeted the eastern countryside of Homs.

In its turn, Syrian army has pounded al-Qaryatayn town (90 km) 60 miles east central city of Homs with heavy artillery since early morning, residents say.

Meanwhile, tit-for-tat attacks have reported between regime forces and ISIS near Mahin town that was captured by the radical group weeks ago.

Three months of Russian airstrikes in Syria have killed more than 2,300 people, a third of them civilians, the Guardian said.

Russia began conducting its air war in Syria on 30 September in support of its embattled ally, Bashar al-Assad.

According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, Moscow’s strikes on Syria have killed 2,371 people so far. The toll includes 792 civilians, among them 180 children.

Amnesty International said last Wednesday that Russia's bombing of Syria may amount to a war crime because of the number of civilians its strikes have killed.
