26 Syrian rebel groups express full support to Saudi Arabia against Iran: statement

(Zaman Al Wasl)- 26 Syrian armed opposition groups, in statement issued Monday, said it endorse and support the Saudi Arabia's step in cutting diplomatic ties with Iran amid rising sectarian tensions sparked by the Saudis' decision to execute a leading Shiite cleric Sheikh Nimr al-Nimr.

The statement said the Iranian regime is the key factor in destabilizing the region due to its unlimited support to (Bashar) al-Assad's criminal gang in Syria.

The Saudi move is a clear reaction against the Iranian intervention in the affairs of the Arab states, such as arming and supporting Shiite militias, the statement added.

The groups expressed readiness to support the kingdom in any future steps, calling on Arab and Islamic states to deter the Iran's terror agenda worldwide.

Saudi Arabia announced Sunday it was severing its ties to Iran after its embassy in Tehran was firebombed in protest at the kingdom’s execution of al-Nimr.

Bahrain and Sudan has joined Saudi Arabia in cutting diplomatic ties.

Saudi Arabia will also cut off all commercial ties with Iran, ban its citizens from traveling to Iran,  foreign minister said.

Meanwhile, Russia said on Monday that attacks on diplomatic missions can never be a legal means of protest.

Russia’s foreign ministry expressed “serious concern” about the worsening situation in the region and called on the two countries and others “to show restraint and avoid any steps that would complicate the situation and lead to a rise in tensions.”

Earlier, Russia is ready to serve as an intermediary to resolve the dispute between Saudi Arabia and Iran that saw the kingdom break off diplomatic relations with Tehran, a Russian foreign ministry source told AFP on Monday. (With agencies)
