400 Sheitat tribesmen joined U.S.-backed alliance to fight ISIS: sources

(Zaman Al Wasl)- About 400 fighters from al-Sheitat tribe have joined the U.S.-backed alliance of Kurdish and Arab forces fighting ISIS in northern Syria, sources told Zaman al-Wasl.

The fighters and their families who were living in the PYD-held town of Shadbag have moved to Tal Abyad town in Raqqa province.

Al-Sheitat tribe that based in the eastern province of Deir Ezzor had revolted against the ISIS rule in July 2014.

The Islamic State crushed the revolt in three days, killing, beheading and crucifying members of the tribe. Around 900 people were estimated to have been killed in the bloodiest single atrocity committed by ISIS in Syria, according to the IBTimes.

The monitoring said about 2000 tribesmen were killed by ISIS and buried in mass graves.

SDF, the new destination of al-Sheitat fighters, was formed in mid-October 2015, as an alliance between the powerful Kurdish People's Protection Units (YPG) and rebel groups including Arab and Assyrian militias.
