Istanbul prosecutor denies earlier report on airport blast

An Istanbul prosecutor responsible for investigating last month’s fatal explosion at an Istanbul airport has denied earlier reports about the blast being caused by mortar rounds.

Chief prosecutor Fahmi Tosun said in a statement Thursday that his office did not make any such claims about the cause of the explosion to any media organization.

“The investigation has not been completed,” the statement added.

Earlier Thursday, local Turkish media reported that four mortar rounds were fired on Dec. 23 from a forested area around two kilometers (1.2 miles) from the province’s Asian-side airport at 2.15 a.m. local time (1215 GMT).

Thirty-year-old airport cleaner Zehra Yamac died when she suffered a fatal head injury in the blast.

Her colleague, Canan Celik, 33, survived with a hand injury.
