Russia and U.S. compete to control northern city of Hasaka

Reporting by Mohamed Al Hussein; Translation by Yusra Ahmed

HASAKA (Zaman Al Wasl)- The united States and Russia are competing each other on founding military bases in Hasaka province, while Iran had withdrawn from the city after termination the existence of Hezbollah in Qamishli in 2015.

The situation is complex, the USA supports the Democratic Union party (PYD), while Russia coordinate with the Syrian regime and PYD as well. this complexity reflects on Syrians’ life and hardens it, besides extending the regime’s life, and affecting the situation in Hasaka city which is rich in oil.

From one side, the U.S. is trying to establish an airport near Rmilan oil field next to Iraq, while Russia keeps sending its soldiers to the city through Qamishli Airport, all that makes the area as an international operation room where countries use the Syrian land to sort out their conflict.
The Russian influence reuslted in stopping “Syrian Democratic Forces” from advancing toward al-Shadadi, the oil-rich area, and turning to fight the Islamic State in fronts of the countryside of Aleppo.

Activist Abo Kassem al-Jazrawi confirmed that planes full arms have started landing in the rural airport situated between Alyarobiyeh and Rmilan east-north of Hasaka, and he had picture some planes before landing.

The activist confirmed that a military cargo-plane and two Abatshi planes had landed in the airport and unloaded arms to the Democratic Union Party and other militia under its control, in order to fight the Islamic State under supervision of 8 American officers, he mentioned that operations like this had happened many times.

Another activist from the tribe of Shumar talked on condition on anonymity explained that the American forces has seized 200 acres around the rural airport from residents without any compensation.

The activist mentioned that last Monday, 7 unfamiliar cars headed toward the airport coming from Malikeyah under heavy guard, later is was found that they were carrying prominent figures of PYD and American officers returning from a meeting in Malikeyah to discuss ways to support the new military base in the area.

Responsible in the Kurdish self-management did not comment on the news of establishing an American military base in the area, where it contains Rmilan oil fields, and the supposed air port is only 15 km away from the oil pumping station in Tal Adas, where oil production of more than 1700 wells collected in the station before pumping the oil to Homs’s refinery station and Tartus seaport. The regime had left this station to PYD in January 2013, and then it was turned into a military area.

Activist Mahmood al-Ahmed from Qamishli reported that 100 Russian soldiers, among them 10 officers had arrived to Qamishli airport via a Syrian military aeroplane, to be transported later to brigade 154 under heavy guard of PYD and Syrian forces.

Al-Ahmed mentioned that Russian experts had visited Qamishli last week to reach to an agreement about distributing the ground forces in the area, meetings were held with militia of PYD and the Syrian regime, and agreed to spread them in regime-controlled areas.

The meeting was held between Russian officers and commanders of Syrian Democratic Forces “SDF”, the USA-supported ally, in December 2015, in the same time, the SDF’s plans changed from targeting the Southern Countryside to regain the wells from the Islamic State, into targeting the State in the countryside of Aleppo.

In October 2015, the United State formed a new alliance called “Syrian Democratic Forces” and supported it with arms to fight the Islamic State, that resulted in controlling al-Hol area by the Democratic Union Party in November 2015.
