53 people killed in explosion of barrel-bomb factory in Homs: source

(Zaman Al Wasl)- At least 53 people, mostly soldiers, were killed on Wednesday in the central province of Homs when a barrel-bomb factory exploded in a military base west of Homs city, well-informed source said.

Regime forces and state-run media were very discreet over the huge explosion that turned the depot to rubble and the echos of the explosion were heard across the city.

Barrel bombs which have killed thousands of Syrians are made of a large barrel-shaped metal container that has been filled with high explosives, possibly shrapnel, oil or chemicals as well.

Homs city, once dubbed "the capital of the revolution", came under full government control last month after a ceasefire deal with rebels.

More than 260,000 people have been killed in Syria's conflict, which began in 2011 with anti-government protests but spiralled into a bloody war.
