Daraa: Al-Muthanna rebel group frees Sheikh Zein al Abedin, rejects reconciliation

(Zaman Al Wasl)- Al-Muthanna Islamic Movement operating in the southern province of Daraa has freed Sheikh Khaled Zein al Abedin, head of Ahel Horan association after one day of abduction, sources told Zaman al-Wasl.

Sheikh Zein al Abedin and Sheikh Yousef al-Amer were kidnapped in the western countryside by militants affiliated to al-Muthanna group on Thursday.

The abduction has followed an order issued by the House of Justice, main Shariah body in Daraa, to confiscate bases of al-Muthanna movement in Sidon and Kahil towns in the eastern countryside.

Rebels have accused the movement of kidnapping Ya'qub al-Ammar early January, head of Daraa governorate council.

Meanwhile, al-Muthanna movement has refused an initiative by fellow rebel groups to end the tension by freeing al-Ammar and holding involved fighters to accountability.

Abduction and assassinations have become one of most threats to rebel commanders and activists in the recent months.

At least 105 rebel fighters, including 15 Free Syrian Army commanders, were assassinated in 2015, in Daraa, local activists said.

Yet, no rebel group has claimed the responsibility of Daraa's serial killing.

Most of Daraa province is controlled by opposition forces, though the government holds parts of the provincial capital and a few villages in the northwest of the province.

Daraa is often dubbed the "cradle" of the uprising against Bashar al-Assad that began with protests in March 2011.
