Homs: ISIS kills dozens of regime troops in eastern countryside

(Zaman Al Wasl)- Dozens of regime troops and allied militias have been killed in clashes with ISIS near Mahin town in the eastern countryside of Homs province, activists said Friday.

8 militants from the Syrian Social Nationalist Party (SSNP) were among the dead as the fighting near ISIS-captured towns of Mahin and Qaryatin is still underway.

Activists have also reported heavy artillery bombardment on the town of Talbiseh east of Homs.

Cashes have also took place near Tier Mala towns near Homs city. Rebels have made progress, field sources said.

In the coastal province of Latakia, regime forces edged closer to a key rebel town Friday, backed by Russian air strikes and military advisers, AFP said.

Soldiers and pro-regime fighters advanced to around five kilometers (three miles) from the town of Rabia, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.

Rabia is a major stronghold for rebel forces in the north of Latakia, which is otherwise largely government-held and a bastion of support for Bashar Assad.

"If the regime retakes Rabia, it will be able to secure the northern part of Latakia province," said Observatory chief Rami Abdel-Rahman.

The advance towards Rabia comes after the Assad troops seized the strategic town of Salma on Jan. 12, after months of operations to capture it from rebels who had held it since 2012. (With AFP)
