Aleppo: rebels recapture territory from ISIS in northern countryside

(Zaman Al Wasl)- Syrian rebels have recaptured two towns in the northern countryside of Aleppo from the Islamic State after fierce fighting that left 20 ISIS fighters dead, field commander told Zaman al-Wasl.

On Saturday, ISIS captured the border towns of al-Bel and Braghida, and neighboring district of Sheikh Reeh after surprise attack on rebels checkpoints started by a suicide bombing. But hours later rebels were able to recapture the towns, Omar Kassouma, senior commander in Sultan Murad Division said.

In the eastern countryside, regime forces took towns of Katar and Tal Hatabat near the ISIS-held town of al-Bab.

Rebels in the southern countryside have thwarted regime attack towns of al-Mefelsa and Kafrbeesh, activists said.

Also in Aleppo, rebels have reached a ceasefire deal with rival Jaysh al-Thuwar group in the northern countryside.

The ceasefire came to end a series of skirmishes between both sides along the the last two months.

Rebels took towns of al-Alamiya and al-Mazraa near Menng military airbase from Jaysh al-Thuwar last Monday after heavy clashes.

Jaysh al-Thuwar is operating under the banner of Syrian Democratic Forces, a U.S.-backed alliance of Kurd and Arab fighters was formed last October to fight ISIS but very quickly the fight has turned against other Islamist groups.

Once Syria's commercial hub, Aleppo province is now divided between regime and rebels control.
