Syria opposition says won't attend peace talks without aid guarantee

The head of the Saudi-backed Syrian opposition said Thursday his group would not attend UN-brokered peace talks in Geneva until an agreement was reached on aid entering besieged towns.

"The opposition is prepared to go to Geneva if these measures are taken," Riad Hijab, coordinator of the High Negotiations Committee, told Al-Arabiya television on the eve of the planned talks.

"Tomorrow we won't be in Geneva. We could go there but we will not enter the negotiating room if our demands aren't met," he said after the opposition held its own talks in Riyadh.

Hours before, Staffan de Mistura the chief UN mediator in the conflict said in a video message to the Syrian people Thursday said "You have seen enough conferences, two of them already taken place," Staffan de Mistura said on the eve of the intra-Syrian negotiations in Geneva. "This one cannot fail."

The opposition High Negotiation Committee has written to U.N. Secretary of General Ban Ki-moon asking the Security Council to implement a resolution that outlined steps including a halt to bombardment of civilian areas and the lifting of blockades on besieged areas.

"We are serious about taking part (in negotiations), and to start the negotiations, but what is hindering the start of negotiations is the one who is bombing civilians and starving them," the statement issued by a spokesman for the HNC said.
