Geneva Peace Talks: Assad's delegation member committed war crimes

(Zaman Al Wasl)- One of the regime's delegation members in Geneva talks is a senior officer in the security services who is involved in war crimes against Syrian people, documents obtained by Zaman al-Wasl showed.

Lieutenant Colonel. Samer Braidi, who was the head of the State Intelligence branch in Eastern Ghouta suburbs near Damascus, was involved in suppressing the peaceful protests against Bashar al-Assad in March 2011.

Activists demanded Braidi's arrest in Geneva since hundreds of people he arrested had been tortured to death.

The United Nations Syria envoy Staffan de Mistura has opened the talks Friday afternoon meeting with the regime delegation, which was headed by the permanent representative of the Syrian regime to the U.N., Bashar al-Jaafari.

Meanwhile, the Syrian opposition said it will join peace talks that have opened in Geneva Friday after assurances from U.S. Secretary of State, John Kerry, and the United Nations that demands to release the detainees and to stop the bombing will be addressed in the preliminary negotiations, source told Zaman al-Wasl.

De Mistura said on Friday he hoped to hold talks with the High Negotiations Committee on Sunday.

More than 260,000 people have been killed since Syria's conflict erupted in 2011.
