Islam Army kills 16 ISIS militants in Eastern Qalamoun: statement

(Zaman Al Wasl)- Dominant Islam Army rebel group, in statement issued Sunday, said its had killed 16 Islamic State fighters in an ambush in the Eastern Qalamoun region near Iraqi borders.

Islam Army's special forces units have ambushed ISIS fighters between al-Dhaba'a and Bir al-Manqoura hilltops in Badiyet al-Sham, or the Syrian desert, killing 16 militants and blowing up two armored vehicles.

The attack is a strategic gain since it helps rebels cutting off ISIS supply routes with Palmyra and territory it controls near the Iraqi border.

Last Sunday, fighters from Islam Army, also known as Jaish al-Islam, opened fire on around 240 regime forces that were preparing to storm Tel Sawwan stronghold of Eastern Ghouta, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.

The observatory said at least 76 regime soldiers had been killed in one of the deadliest attacks of its kind since the conflict began.

At least 100 remain unaccounted for, according to the observatory.

Families of those killed or missing -- many of whom hail from the coastal province of Latakia -- are demanding to receive the bodies of their loved ones, he told AFP.

Jaish al-Islam is the strongest opposition faction in Eastern Ghouta, a large suburb of Damascus that is regularly bombarded by government forces.

The regime has struggled to take back territory there despite air support from its ally, Russia.

A new death toll by a Syrian research group says at least 400,000 people have been killed since revolution erupted in March 2011.
