Homs: rebels target regime patrol, kill members

(Zaman Al Wasl)- A rebel group operating in central Homs province said late on Wednesday it had blown up a regime patrol on the main highway that links the capital with Aleppo, killing all members.

The movement of Tahrir Homs, or the Liberation of Homs, vowed to carry out more attacks in regime-held areas.

Rebels of the northern countryside of Homs said early Wednesday that 15 fighters loyal to Bashar al-Assad were killed in a surprise attack targeted their checkpoints in Tal Dera village west of Salamieh town, a region dominated by the Ismaili sect, an offshoot of Shiite Islam.

Rebels said their attacks was in response to NDF ambush two weeks ago that killed 14 civilians north of Homs when they were fleeing the embattled rebel-held area to Idlib province.

Meanwhile, Russia warplanes have conducted at least 50 raids on rebel-held areas in Homs and Hama in the past 24 hours, residents said Wednesday.

The military offensive has cut off 120,000 people in the northern Homs since mid-January, worsening hunger and killing patients unable to get to medical care, a U.N. report said lat week.

"There are reports of increasingly acute shortages of food, basic commodities, medical items and fuel in the area. With the irregular supply routes used until mid-January now cut off, food items that are still available are now being sold at much higher prices," said the report by the U.N. humanitarian office.

Meanwhile, the regime army and Russian warplanes have renewed aerial and ground attacks on the Turkmen-dominated village of Harbanfaseh town in Hama, residents said on Wednesday.
