Assad appoints war crimes perpetrator as intelligence head in Homs

(Zaman Al Wasl)- Bashar al-Assad dismissed on Wednesday the head of military intelligence in central Homs province, appointing a war-crime perpetrator instead after an ISIS double car bombings killed about 60 people on Sunday.

Al-Assad has appointed General. Hassan Da'bool instead of General. Yasin Dhahi to ease residents indignation, sources told Zaman al-Wasl.

Dabool's new post has a lot of messages that al-Assad seeks o deliver to the frustrated supporters in the Alawite-dominated district of al-Zahraa.

Da'bool was the head of the notorious Branch 215, one of the most brutal security services in Syrian where more than 11,000 detainees were tortured to death between 2011and 2013.

In mid 2013, 55,000 photos smuggled out of Syria by a former military police photographer gave a glimpse of some of the abuses being committed in Branch 215 and under Dabool's command.

The digital images of 11,000 dead detainees showed emaciated bodies and the defector, identified only as Ceasar, described seeing corpses with "deep wounds and burns and strangulations.

The al-Zahraa attack was the worst since twin blasts in October 2014 hit a school, killing at least 55 people, including 49 children.

Al-Zahraa -- whose residents are mostly from the same Alawite sect as Syria's ruling clan -- has been regularly targeted.

IS, which last month claimed a double bombing that killed 22 people, said it carried out the latest attack.

The group also said two of its suicide bombers carried out the Sayyida Zeinab bombings south of Damascus that left 72 people dead.
