Aleppo: rebels thwart regime attack in western countryside, ISIS cuts supply route

(Zaman Al Wasl)- Syrian rebels thwarted Friday an attack carried out by the regime army and Shiite militias on the western countryside of Aleppo province, killing 10 troops, local reporter said.

On Friday's down, regime forces backed by Shiite fighters took parts of Sheikh Aqeel town. But hours later rebels were able to deter the attack, reporter said, while the aerial and ground bombardment killed 8 civilians in the western countryside.

On Thursday, state-run news agency and the Syrian Observatory for human Rights said regime troops have recaptured the town of Khanaser from ISIS militants after three days of heavy battles.

Meanwhile, ISIS media outlet, Aamaq agency, said the radical groups has seized strategic Jabal al-Hamam district near Khanaser, cutting off the regime's supply route to Aleppo.

International talks to resolve the Syria crisis may restart in Geneva on March 7, a Russian Foreign Ministry official said on condition of anonymity on Friday.

The "cessation of hostilities" agreed by the United States and Russia is due to take hold on Saturday morning from midnight. But opponents of Bashar al-Assad say they expect the government to press on with its advance, by branding opposition fighters al Qaeda militants unprotected by the truce.

Russian President Vladimir Putin Friday said that the peace process in Syria would be "complicated" but that there were no other ways of ending the conflict, ahead of the scheduled start of a ceasefire.

"We understand fully and take into account that this will be a complicated, and maybe even contradictory process of reconciliation, but there is no other way," Putin said in televised comments.

President Tayyip Erdogan's aide and spokesman said Friday that Turkey has serious worries about the ceasefire deal.

Ibrahim Kalin also told a news conference in Ankara that Turkey will respond to any incidents threatening its national security in line with its rules of engagement.
