Nusra Front fighters break up anti-Assad protest in Idlib city

(Zaman Al Wasl)- Al Qaeda Syria's branch, the Nusra Front, harshly broke up an ant-regime demonstration in northern Idlib city and arrested five media activists as the revolution's fifth anniversary nears, activists said on Monday.

Fighters of the Nusra-led Army of conquest, or Fatah Army, have beaten media activists and prevented demonstrators form rising the revolution flag in the main square.

Activists said Nusra had threatened to open fire on demonstrators next time.

Social media activists said 'as Assad as Nusra,' due to the crackdown Nusra uses against peaceful protests.

A year ago, Fatah Army seized control of Idlib city with vast territory from regime army.
 
Last Friday, activists organized 104 demonstrations from over 100 city, town and village in the war-torn country. Thousands of Syrians in rebel-held areas went to streets on Friday in a move recalling the memorable peaceful protests, rising revolution flags and chanting freedom slogans.

'The (Syrian) people want to bring down the regime' they chanted.

On Monday, new wave of demonstration took place in rebel-held Aleppo.

The unprecedented U.S.-Russian 'cessation of hostilities' agreement that came into force a week ago, has slowed the pace of the war, although it does not include Islamic State militants or the al Qaeda-linked Nusra Front.

A total of 180 people were killed since the truce begun in Feb,27 and 132  violation recorded, according to the Syrian Network for Human Rights.

At least 400,000 people killed, 70,000 wounded and 11 million displaced since revolution erupted on March 2011.
