(Zaman Al Wasl)- Syria will hold a presidential election in 18 months, Russia's RIA news agency on Friday quoted the United Nations peace mediator on Syria Staffan de Mistura as saying.
The
starting point for the election will be the latest round of Syria peace
talks which are planned for March 14 in Geneva, de Mistura told RIA in
an interview.
On Friday, 0pposition said it would attend peace talks that were set for March 14, but downplayed the chances of reaching agreement with the Syrian regime.
A statement from the High Negotiations Committee said it would focus on the establishment of an interim governing body with full executive powers, and would insist on Syria's territorial integrity.
It also
said the Syrian government was preparing a military air and ground
escalation in the "coming period", without elaborating.
On Thursday, a new campaign formed by 18 civil and political bodies said
on Thursday have pledged to protect the freedom and justice
revolt from its enemies.
"Our revolution is ongoing and we have to continue what we began five
yeas ago." said in statement. (With Reuters)
