Syrian opposition says Russia withdrawal could lead to end of conflict, spokesperson said.

Syria's opposition are "not against" direct talks with the country's government, RIA news agency quoted Salim al-Muslat, spokesman for the main Syrian opposition alliance in Geneva, as saying on Tuesday.

"We are not against the beginning of direct talks," RIA quoted al-Muslat as saying.

Meanwhile, the French foreign ministry spokesman said Tuesday anything that can contribute to de-escalation in Syria should be encouraged, offering a cautious welcome to Russia's announcement that it will start withdrawing troops from Syria.

"We have taken note of President (Vladimir) Putin's announcements. If those are translated into action that would be a positive development," a foreign ministry spokesman said.
