(Eqtsad)- Civil defense in Daraa, the pioneer in liberated areas in Syria, has a satisfying and successful experience in helping and rescuing inured people besides sheltering the displaced, despite difficulties and the threatening and targeting the staff by the Syrian regime.
The overturn of peaceful demonstrations into armed conflict incited by the Syrian regime's brutality, which had used armed forces to suppress peaceful people. The increasing number of wounded and destruction resulted from bombing and shelling, coincided with disappearance of health care and other governmental civil difense led to the born of civil defense forces on Daraa, southern of Syria, the spark of the Syrian revolution .
Civil defense in Daraa was established in April 2012, with effort from enthusiastic young volunteers to be as an alternative of the Syrian regime’s services in areas controlled by the armed formations in April 2012, Abddullah al-Sarhan, the manager of the civil defense explained to Eqtsad.
The manager mentioned that civil defense activities provides different kinds of services in conflict areas like rescuing wounded and injured and giving first aid, evacuating people from buildings after bombing, rescuing and sheltering the displaced, besides maintenance and fixing water and electricity services, burying killed people, building shelters and basements.
Al-Sarhan confirmed that civil defense association in southern Syria is an independent neutral humanitarian organization and is not affiliate of any political party or country and its goal is proviing services to neglected and isolated areas because of war.
The civil defense manager in Daraa mentioned that they were the pioneer to establish civil defense services and other cities followed. He mentioned that civil defense in Syria has united their effort and formed one association for the whole country and held their first constituent conference in which activities, plans, goals and mechanism of implementing them were discussed.
Al-Sarhan added that most workers are defected from the regime’s institutions like fire brigades and hospitals, besides volunteers who were intensively trained in Jordan to perform the civil defense duties, besides provide training and education activities for women and children in conflict areas, about methods of protecting themselves, evacuating process and ways of dealing with left-over unexploded bombs especially cluster ones.
Mohammed Abazid, a member of rescue team confirmed that their work is very dangerous and they are usually targeted as many members of the staff were killed by regime’s snipers although the staff and equipments are clearly marked. He mentioned that civil defense had saved lives of hundreds of injured people.
Abazid called for the need to protect the rescue and civil defense workers because their jobs aims to help humans regardless of their race, origin, religion or sect.
Abo Shaker Jawabrah, a member of civil defense said : “civil defense forces provided rescuing and emergency services to people over its 14 centres in Daraa and provided lots of help to displaced by providing shelter and support.”
Jawabrah mentioned that working in rescuing people is very personally satisfying job because it provides help to people who lost most kinds of living facilities because of war.
Sarah Horani, an activist and volunteer in civil defense said to Eqtsad: “civil defense has performed lots of activities and education sessions to people, as it took chance of recent truce to perform a new education course for 4 days for children and women about different types of weapons' left-over products and how to protect themselves during the shelling.”
Horani mentioned that lots of women and children have attended the course and they were practically trained on the correct procedure during shelling and mortar bombing.
Ayham, a-10-year-boy, one of the participant in the course said: “we have learnt how to hide and lie down during shelling and airstrikes either in streets or inside houses, as I learn that if I was in street, I must lie down with my mouth open and ears closed, while if I was inside the house I would need to stay next to the supporting columns of the house, because they are less likely to get demolished.
Ayham added that the trainer had shown them some cluster bombs and warned them not to touch any unknown body on ground, because it might be unexploded bomb and might blow out if they touch it.
The military operation in Horan had caused demolishing of many areas where lots of weapons' residual like cluster bombs, which considered real threat to people, and civil defense try to find and deactivate them.
The civil defense in Syria had been established in 2013, their capacity has exceeded 2700 members. The idea started when the Syrian regime started bombing areas described as “liberated” after regime’s withdrawal from them by the end of 2012.
The “motto” of civil defense is a verse from the Quran: "To save one life is to save all of humanity", that why civil defense members respond to bombs or go into areas that contained soldiers from the al-Assad regime, even sometimes they rescued Iranian fighters that have been fighting on behalf of the regime and members of Hezbollah.
These days of March 5 years ago was the beginning of the Syrian revolution's spark, when a state of unrest began on March 15, in Damascus and Aleppo, however, in the southern city of Daraa, sometimes called the "Cradle of the Revolution", protests had been triggered on March 6, by the brutal torture of 15 young students from prominent families who were arrested for writing anti-government graffiti in the city "The people want the fall of the regime" a trademark slogan of the Arab Spring.
Demonstrators clashed with local police, and confrontations escalated on March 18 after Friday prayers. Security forces attacked protesters gathered at al-Omari Mosque using water cannons and tear gas, followed by live fire, killing four.
The Syrian revolution enters its 6th year, with more than 300 thousand deaths and more than 10 millions left their areas and houses.
