Clashes renew between ISIS, Kurdish forces northeastern Syria

HASAKA (Zaman Al Wasl)- Clashes renewed between Islamic State and  Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces on Thursday in areas on the borders of Deir ez-Zor province west to Markada town in the southern countryside of Hasaka.

Kurdish sources mentioned that US backed “Syria Democratic Forces” took control of “Rwayshid” station located west to “Markada” between Hasaka and Deir ez-Zor governorates. The move is a new attempt to take over the last ISIS headquarters in Hasaka.

Sources pointed out the big preparation of the SDF for the new battle against ISIS following new shipment of weaponry. The sources did not mention on which front the battle will take place.

“Democratic Syria Forces” took over a gas station belonging to “Arwat” family from “al-Bagara” tribe near “Rwayshid”. The area has trade shops and is a transportation center on the road connecting to Deir ez-Zor-al-Zarab from which sub-roads emerge to “Jazret al-Meelaj, Zageer Bakara, al-Salhiye, al-Saawa, Jazret al-Buhamid in al-Kasra town” west of Deir ez-Zor, military source said.

Activist “Malaz al-Yousef” reported “Syria Democratic Forces” previously attempted to detour “Markada” area from the west to cut the road connecting it to Deir ez-Zor, but ISIS counterattacked and clashes retreated to the train station near “Faas” village west of Shadadi.

Al-Yousef added “Syria Democratic Forces” backed by International Coalition warplanes tried to advance along train railway towards areas in “al-Sur” area north of Deir ez-Zor. The area would enable the forces of cutting the important road and would facilitate rounding up “Markada”, the area close to two oil fields; “al-Malha” and “Abu Hashab”.

More displaced Iraqis arrived in Hasaka Countryside due to clashes on the Iraqi border line while Yazidi militias and Peshmerga Forces took over border villages between Syria and Iraq following withdrawal of ISIS, Malaz al-Yousef told Zaman al-Wasl.

Al-Yousef reported the severe lack of bread in the western countryside which usually gets the material from Hasaka City.

Self-administration officials promised to operate the automatic bakery that was partially damaged in the U.S.-led air strikes on February 16 of the city.

In “al-Haul” town on the borders with Iraq, Kurdish “Peoples’ Protection Units” and their allies in ”Syria Democratic Forces” implemented strict security procedures to counter any possible attack of ISIS following ISIS most recent attack by a car bomb on one of the forces checkpoints in “al-Bashiye” village subject to “al-Khan” city hall where the forces inspected the locals houses and asked them to leave for fear of any potential ISIS agents, local sources told Zaman al-Wasl.

The local sources added, YPG is preventing locals of “al-Haul” of returning to their homes which were broken into and robbed since the forces took control over the town 14 of November,2015 following withdrawal of ISIS due to International Coalition air force bombardment.

The last strongholds of ISIS in Hasaka is “Markada” town after it lost “al-Shadadi” and “al-Arysha” for YPG with leadership of PYD last February following clashes in which International Coalition warplanes played a crucial role.
