Suwayda prison unrest ends by Assad's cousin apology

(Zaman Al Wasl)-  The political inmates of Suwayda central prison southern Syria protested Friday against the successive violations of Bashar al-Assad’s cousin who spends a life-imprisonment sentence over pillaging and robbery.

One of the political inmates was insulted and beaten by Numair al-Assad and the police guards on Friday, what sparked an anger wave resulted in riot acts and almost controlling the prison wings, source to Zaman al-Wasl.

The source explained the political detainees who are sentenced by field court chose elected a number of representatives to negotiate their demands. The most important of which was not to insult the detainees and demanded an official apology from 'Numair'  to the assaulted detainee and to all the political detainees at the prison.

The demands of the detainees were accepted to put a stop to the unrest without any further confrontations with the prison police, the source explained.

The source revealed that 'Numair' had apologized from the detainee whom he assaulted and from all political detainees in the prison and especially those who are sentenced by the field court.

Numair is a life-time sentenced by the field court due to his commitments of several crimes and pillaging. The most famous of these took place in “al-Haram” currency change company’s office, known by most Syrians. He was captured by the office security cameras and the footage was published on “YouTube” and other social media outlets. He spent 15 years in the prison.

Suwayda central state prison has more than one thousand political prisoners especially those sentenced by military field court whether a life-sentence or 15-year sentence. That was before the terrorism decree was issued and before setting up terrorism court. The detainees were sentenced due to their involvement in protests calling for ouster of the regime.
