Rights advocates demand protection of Syrian refugee women after trafficking reports

(Zaman Al Wasl)- Syrian Feminist Lobby condemned what it called “the dirty crime” committed in the right of all women and Syrian women specifically through the crime of human trafficking of the network discovered recently in Lebanon.

The lobby stressed the necessity of doing urgent moves to help the victims and protect the Syrian refugee women in Lebanon demanding the Lebanese Government to track down those involved in the crime and protection of Syrian women on its soil.

The lobby called on the legalists in Lebanon to closely follow the case to avoid media blackout and track media platforms that dealt ironically with the suffering of the victims.

The statement of the lobby gave responsibility to the United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) the one supposedly responsibly to protect and provide for all the refugees in neighboring countries.

Syrian Writer and Activist Rima Flihan, public relations coordinator at the lobby, told Zaman al-Wasl the lobby is contacting Lebanese NGOs because the issue needs a to be addressed by legalists and Lebanese organizations in Lebanon in order to bring about a solution to what happened.

Flihan pointed out that “such a dirty crime and human trafficking networks have long existed in Syria and the region, but they did not attract as much attention as they did not.”

“Activists in women rights have always demanded the track down of these crimes and protection of victims for a long time,” she added.

In the light of the hegemony performed on the Lebanese judicial system and its inefficiency in Lebanon, Flihan said, “the civil Lebanese community is an active and effective actor in Lebanon and hopefully it will pressure the authorities to track down committers of the crime and will pressure media to follow on with the case.”

Flihan stressed the “urgent thing now is to protect the victims and support them legally and psychologically and secure their safety.”

The Syrian Feminist Lobby is not in contact with any of the victims since the lobby is a political women rights organization and it does not have the authority to work in the legal and judicial field in Lebanon. The lobby is contacting Syrian and Lebanese persons who have the authority to address the case and since the crime happened on the Lebanese soil, it has to go through the Lebanese legal procedures, Flihan told Zaman al-Wasl.

Rima Flihan, the coordinator of public relations committee in the Syrian Feminist Lobby demanded, “the urgent protection of the victims and securing legal representation in conjunction with media and civil activity to hold the committers accountable for the crime.” She called for “a necessity to pressure UNHCR to secure and provide better living conditions for the refugees under any legal status.”

Syrian Feminist Lobby is an independent non-partisan political group committed to equal participation of women and men in political decision-making processes in Syria and on all levels.
