Baath Party in Homs funds regime militias: document

(Zaman Al Wasl)- Leaked documents obtained by Zaman Al Wasl confirm the commitment of Baath Party- Homs Branch in recruiting and arming youth and others, as it has become a centre to form armed groups to founding barriers to control the province's vital services and places.

Documents cover a period from 2014 till the beginning of 2016 have shown that Baath party- Homs branch was working as a military and security centre similar to intelligence and army by recruiting hundreds of volunteers and training them to form forces supporting regime outside the Army institution.

Documents mentioned that the branch worked on forming “Baath Battalions” which consist of people from different backgrounds including officers of different ranks, University graduates besides people who do not have any academic qualifications.

Moreover, leaked documents detailed the training courses on fighting and military skills, as a preparation to distribute them to barriers over different areas, besides payments and fund.

It has been shown that the main coordinator and responsible for recruiting, dismissing and distributing members over barriers was the Head of Homs Branch of Baath Party, Sobhi harb, through hierarchical official letters, either by receiving suggestion from sub-offices, and Party sections, or to the higher level like the National Leadership of the party.

There was, according to documents a prominent role for Iyad Zafror, the Head of Youth office, in recruiting and communication with responsible at different levels. The branch was presented in the document as having an influential role in all vital institutes and services, by interfering with the province council, directorates and institutions like directorate of Education, the sport union, as well controlling the transportation.
