People of Palmyra pay high price for liberation: statement

(Zaman Al Wasl)- The Local Coordination Committee of the newly ISIS-liberated city of Palmyra launched Friday a campaign to highlight the miserable situation of people of the ancient city, according to statement posted Friday.

The campaign of “Tadmouryon, victims of their liberation” said when the Islamic State controlled Palmyra in May 2015, Russia’s and regime’s forces started vengeful attack on the city and against its people claiming they fight the Islamic State, therefore people have no option but to leave the city to save their lives leaving all their possessions.”

The statement mentioned that regime have not left any option for civilians to return to their town after burning their houses and looting them beside bad treatment and revenge of them by the sectarian armed groups.

The campaign organisers appealed to all humanitarian and revolutionary forces including the National Coalition and interim government to feel the suffering of people in Palmyra and act to help them.

Activist Naser al-Thaer, a member of Palmyra's coordination told Zaman Al Wasl that campaign has been launched after several requests from people of the city to look at their problem and suffering and their difficult living conditions. “the main goal of the campaign is to support Palmyra’s people and deliver their voice to the world and encourage aid and relief associations to support people who lost everything.

Al-Thaer added that people in Palmyra were victims to the two battle between the Syrian regime and the Islamic State, and they pay the price when ISIS “liberated” the city and then when regime regain control on Palmyra.

The Coordination highlighted that people who were displaced are experiencing very difficult living condition where there is no work or income.
The activist said that they have a list of all people who left the city and their new place, and mentioned that they can deliver aid to any area taking advantage of wide relations of the revolutionary Coordination.

According to latest statistics, Palmyra’s population reached to 110 thousand people, 30 thousand in Raqqa city, 25 thousand in Idlib city and countryside, 25 thousand entered Turkish land and live in camps and 10 Thousand run away dt Deir Ezzor, and 5 thousand preferred to live in regime-controlled areas, the same number in Aleppo countryside, and another in Rakban camp at Jordanian borders.

All displaced people who left Palmyra live hard conditions and miserable life except those live in regime-controlled areas. They suffer of lack of food, medication and spread of Disease, besides using schools as a shelter.

ISIS controlled the city of Palmyra in may 2015, but the regime with the help of Russian air strike was successful in regaining control on the city in mid March this year.
