Hasaka: ISIS kills 21 SDF fighters near al-Shadadi town

(Zaman Al Wasl)- At least 21 fighters from the U.S.-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) have been killed and 3 held captive in an Isis offensive on SDF stronghold south of al-Shadadi town in Hasaka province, activists said.

Local sources said clashes erupted between Isis and PYD-led SDF alliance south of al-Shadadi, most civil populated area in the southern countryside.

The local sources pointed out that a group of Isis fighters infiltrated a school in which SDF is positioned. Before they infiltrate the school, a car bomb exploded near the school and killed 21 SDF fighters and captured 3.

Isis follows a certain pattern in their offensive. They attack with small groups on PYD and its allies’ strongholds especially in al-Azawi village south of al-Shadadi. Isis tries to confuse International Alliance Airforce by adhering to the forces they back up, SDF.

Isis declared responsibility of killing 6 YPG fighters including a leader in a bomb explosion in countryside of Qamishli in addition to destroying bulldozer for PYD units with a directed missile east of al-Shadadi city.

Kurdish Protection Units, army wing of PYD, said in a statement that Isis shelled mortars twice on their locations in al-Makman village, west of al-Shadadi and Barudi village, situated on the Syrian Iraqi border.

Isis still controls Markadeh, last stronghold in Hasaka Governorate and clashes with SDF take place in two points, near the villages of al-Dushaysha, and Tell Jaber from the Iraqi border and the villages of Kashkash Ziyanat and Kashkash Jabur south of al-Shadadi, and villages of Jiyad and Inad in southern west.

US backed SDF alliance recaptured strategic al-Shadadi and al-Arysha in late February via a military campaign and it was very important battle for SDF alliance since its formation in October 2015 from militias affiliated with PYD and self-administration. United States backed the alliance and provided them with weapons.
