U.N. Syria Envoy in Damascus to enhance Geneva Talks

(Zaman Al Wasl)- The U.N. Special Envoy to Syria visited  Damascus on Sunday to meet with minister of foreign affairs of regime Walid al-Mualim and Russian ambassador in Damascus, according to close to the regime Watan newspaper. The newspaper pointed out the regime delegate to participate in Geneva Talks arrives Friday in Geneava.

Iranian Pars news agency stated that Staffan de Mistura  will visit Tehran after Damascus on Tuesday to hold talks with Iranian officials regarding developments in Syria.

De Mistura who visited Moscow last week and met with Sergey Lavrov announced the next round of talks starting on 13 April.

De Mistura said in a press conference that the next round of talks should be clear in heading towards a political process in order to start political transformation in Syria. On the other hand, Member in Higher Committee for Negotiations Salem al-Musalat said on Saturday the opposition- in the next round- will not agree on Assad taking any role in the interim government adding the decision is the Syrian people’s decision who do not want to see Assad in power anymore. There should not be any more waste of time because the cost of souls and people dying is very high in Syria.

Basmah Qadamani, member in Higher Committee for Negotiations said “the regime only talks of a national government with some opposition whereas the opposition delegate holds into its demands of an interim government including all authorities and that of the president authorities.”

Basmah added that we do not know how the regime and opposition visions will be reconciled warning of the collapse of Russian-US-brokered ceasefire in Syria.

Russian MP and member of the Russian delegation visiting Damascus Alexander Yushchenko said today that Damascus is ready to engage in the rounds with constructive opposition on principles of sovereignty preservation.
