Latakia: regime forces fail to recapture Kaabneh village despite repeated attacks

(Zaman Al Wasl)- The recent attack by regime forces to recapture al-Kabaneh village, the highest point in Latakia province, has been failed for the11th time in seven months.

The strategic al-Kabaneh is a cross point between Hama, Idlib and Latakia Provinces. The regime lost 200 soldiers and tens of vehicles in the attacks on al-Kabaneh.

Media activist, Abu Mohamed al-Najji said, “regime started the attack at night by violent artillery shelling and air strikes. Regime warplanes dropped tens of explosive barrels and missiles. At dawn, regime started attacking and rebels were prepared and countered the attack and foiled it.”

-Strategic al-Kabaneh-

Abu Khaled al-Hafawi, a leader in the Free Syrian Army (FSA), said the regime insistence on recapturing al-Kabaneh is because it is the key entrance to Idlib western countryside and it overlooks vast areas of al-Ghab Plains in Hama. Al-Kabaneh also overlooks most of the villages in Kurds and Turkmen Mountains as well as the international road between Latakia and Idlib Provinces.

Pro-regime Katibet al-Jabal (the Mountain Brigade) wrote on its Facebook page that al-Kabaneh will be the regime target in the coming days. It stressed that the regime will not stop the attacks on the village until it recapture it and expel what they called “terrorists” from the village. The brigade claimed the regime entered the village, but the regime had only recaptured few points in the surrounding of al-Kabaneh. Rebels disclaimed that and stressed the regime did not advance.

Al-Hafawi said the regime could not enter al-Kabaneh due to the significant number of rebels in the village who watch regime forces movement and continuously drain them.

-Revolution Icon-

Al-Kabaneh is considered the revolution’s icon in the Syrian coast. It is the first village that rebels liberated in the summer of 2011. Later on, the rebels made it a launching point to liberate other areas in Kurds and Turkmen Mountains. Rebels dug trenches to move without being noticed by the regime forces and established fortified bunkers which helped them keep al-Kabaneh.

Rebels had announced on Monday starting Radd al-Mazalim battle to break the silence and hesitation and respond to regime fire.

The rebels declared fighting again to recapture areas lost to the regime with the help of the Russian Air Force end of last year and beginning of this year.

Al-Kabaneh is 1000 thousand meters above sea levels and has thousands of orchards. Forests surround the village which facilitates rebels moving and hiding.
